The Health Service is directly available by calling 933 025 787 (School Nurse Celeste) (National mobile netword number).

It is run by:

• At the time of enrolment/renewal of enrolment of a student, it is requested that his/her Parents fill in a Medical Record on the Eduka system.
  All the details provided are revised at the beginning of the year and, if necessary, the parents may be summoned to school (infirmary), in order to clarify the situation and/or to sign an Individual Reception Protocol or a Customised Schooling Project [For example: cases of more serious diseases, need to implement special measures for several reasons, students with special needs, etc].
• Bear in mind that any and all diseases must be communicated to the Health Service and that a medical report must be presented at the Infirmary. This process must be repeated at the beginning of each school year and/or during the year, if there is a development of the disease.

• Food allergies or the need to exclude some type of food (for any other reason) must be communicated to the Health Service, so that the necessary measures for such exclusion may be taken in good time, on the classroom, during school trips and by the Catering Service.

It is extremely important that the medical details of a student are updated, in order to provide him/her a better service, when and if it is necessary.

• Any student who must take medication in the school (whether regular medication or for an extreme situation or as SOS) must present the medication at the Infirmary including, obligatorily, a copy of the prescription or of the medical report.
• Any contagious disease must be communicated, as soon as possible, to the Health Service. The student can only attend classes again after the end of the risk of infection.
• In the case of pediculosis (existence of lice), we request that the parents inform the school so that adequate measures may be taken.
• The Parents may, on their initiative, request an appointment with the Health Service for any reason which they consider relevant.

The Health Service provides, among others, the following types of care:

• Treating wounds and traumatic injuries
• Referring school accidents
• Informing the Parents of acute symptoms (fever, severe pain or any other relevant situation)
• Support to teachers, psychologist, etc, in specific cases involving students
• Screening for vision problems for students of certain school years
• Disclosure of information when this is justified in the case of contagious diseases
• Administering regular medication and as SOS
• Consultations for urgent or recurring situations, when the doctor is available on the infirmary
• Participating on the Committee for School Health
• Fostering several activities to raise awareness of health issues
• Organizing talks with external participants about health issues
• Supervising major sports events

On all the situations which are considered relevant, the Parents are informed of what is going on as soon as possible.

Continuation of treatment at the request of the parents:

Any medication to be administered to children during the school day should be delivered to the School Nurse together with a copy of the prescription.

For students who use school transportation, the medication must be given to the assistant, together with the prescription and the following details: name of the student, year, hour and amount to be taken, if these are not included on the prescription.

Occasional administration of medication:

The Nurse provides some medication which can be administered to students with their parents’ authorisation.  When dealing with serious situations, such as those which require that a student be sent to hospital, the parents will be contacted.  This way, the parents can take the child to the hospital at their own convenience.  If this is not possible, the school will ensure transport to the hospital using appropriate means.

As part of the CESC, educational and preventative activities (preferably related to the school program) are conducted on various topics throughout the schooling of the students, and regularly involve the medical team of the school together with external participants.

• Drugs and alcohol:Participation by the police/a psychologist
• Tobacco and its consequences: Participation by a pulmonary specialist
• Sex education: Participation by a psychiatrist/specialist in Family Planning
  • “Red Ribbon” campaign
• Dangers and deviations on the Internet
  • Risks/dangers/addiction to the internet
• Hygiene
  • Washing hands
  • Screening for vision problems
  • Balanced diet
